Snowflake Letter Response

By Lynn Handshy

The beginning of this letter writing and response project is in Shelly Lyon’s article "Snowflake Letters". (Read it first to know how the snowflake letters come to be.)

The lovely letters show up on the first grade desktops as if they have fallen from the sky in a snow flurry, but really they are from the fourth grade buddies. As the children read the snowy letters, they realize that there is a question about weather in the body of the text that they must answer. The first graders may know the answer to the question, or they may need to do some research to discover the answer.

Once the answer is found, then the first grader writes the answer on a small snowflake. The first grade answer is written on the small snowflake made from the black line master I’ve included here. The flake can be cut out to the best level of the first grader’s manual dexterity.

To display these letters and responses I hung them on white yarn above each child’s desk. When the big buddies come to visit, the letters can be reread and the first grader’s responses can be discussed. From this wintry looking snowflake display lots of good letter writing, research, cutting and good will has evolved…not to mention a lot of fun!

Happy winter!
Lynn
