2 cups sugar

1 cup water

Paper clip, string, and stick, or just a clean stick

Maple flavoring, or another of your choice

Have a parent help you boil the sugar in the water on the stove. Stir while heating. When the mixture boils, put in one drop of flavoring. Stir in flavoring.

Choose whatever base you want to have your rock candy sugar crystals grow on; a stick or a string. Moisten that base with water and roll in dry sugar.

When the mixture is cool, pour it in an open jar. Place the moistened, sugared base in the jar of liquid mixture. Tie a paper clip to one end of the string. Tie the other end of the string to a stick that will hang the string in the middle of the jar of sugar mixture. Or you could just put the stick into the jar and lean it against the opening of the jar.

Wait and watch the crystals grow on your base. How long do you think it will take?
