Did You Know?

Here are some interesting tidbits of information about our flag, its history and the nation.

The Flag

The flag is the embodiment, not of sentiment, but of history. It represents the experiences made by men and women, the experiences of those who do and live under that flag.

Woodrow Wilson, 1915

The American Flag

A thoughtful mind, when it sees a nation's flag, sees not the flag only, but the nation itself; and whatever may be its symbols, its insignia, he reads chiefly in the flag the government, the principles, the truths, the history which belongs to the nation that sets it forth.

Henry Ward Beecher

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

The American's Creed

I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

written by William Tyler Page
adopted by the House of Representatives
April 3, 1918

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God*, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

by Francis Bellamy, 1892.

* The words "under God" were added to the Pledge of Allegiance by the Congress in 1954.

"Shoot, if you must, this old gray head,
But spare your country's flag," she said.

John Greenleaf Whittier
