Teacher's Guide

  • Pencil paper activity.
  • Print out this page (teachers guide), and pages 1 and 2 linked below. Then photocopy.
  • Each child should have two pieces of paper : The PICTURE PUZZLE WORK SHEET and The PUZZLE DRAWING GUIDE.
Note: This game is for shape recognition. Do not cut out the puzzle pieces.

Each puzzle piece on page 2 has heavy dark lines inside, these are the lines the child will redraw into the corresponding puzzle piece on page 1. Each time they match a piece from page 2 with a piece on page one (they may have to turn the page until the orientation matches), they should put an "X" through it so they won't duplicate, this will help them remember what they have already drawn.

An easier way of doing this exercise, perhaps for younger children, is to locate the matching shape; slip page two under page one; and trace the lines. You can also do this by holding the paper up to a window and tracing.

PAGE 1. PICTURE PUZZLE WORK SHEET
This sheet will look faint when it is printed, this will make it easier to see the child's final drawing.
PAGE 2. PUZZLE DRAWING GUIDE
This sheet is your drawing guide. Even though this page looks like a puzzle, DO NOT CUT IT OUT.

Draw!

  1. Use a bright color crayon or marker. You may begin anywhere, but I suggest you begin with the piece in the upper left corner of the page. Rotate page 2 until you have found the puzzle piece that matches the shape.

  2. Draw the bold lines you see inside the piece on page 2, into the blank shape on page 1. The little notches are there to help locate the right spot for your line.

  3. Go to another puzzle piece and repeat steps 1 and 2. Repeat this process until you have drawn all the lines that appear on page 2 into the blank shapes on page 1.
Congratulations! You have just drawn a whole picture without knowing what you were going to draw.
