Rock with a fossil
  1. The animal dies.

  2. The soft fleshy parts rot away.

  3. The remaining bones and teeth are eventually covered with sediment through season after season of rainfall.
Rock with a fossil
  1. The bones, teeth and shells are surrounded with minerals, carried by mud which begins to harden and form stone.

  2. The new rocks, containing the bone and teeth fossils, must now be worked up to a dry surface so they can dry out and be discovered.
